Lunar New Year AR: Year of the Dragon

Celebrating Global Traditions Through Augmented Reality

To celebrate Lunar New Year 2024, I designed an interactive AR dragon headpiece inspired by the Year of the Dragon. This effect was created in collaboration with my team at Oraar Studio, where I led the creative direction, sculpted and modelled the dragon head, and worked closely on texturing and animation to bring it to life.

The goal was to craft a joyful, expressive effect that people around the world could use to share in the celebration. We developed the headpiece to track the user’s face in real time, making the experience playful and immersive across both Instagram and Facebook platforms.

The response was incredible. The effect gained widespread organic traction, with thousands of users sharing it globally as part of their Lunar New Year celebrations. Its reach and success ultimately led to the filter being acquired by Meta in December, marking a major milestone for both the project and our studio.

This project showed the power of AR as a tool for cultural connection, storytelling and creative expression. It’s a strong example of how handcrafted 3D assets can be transformed into interactive experiences that resonate across global audiences.

This type of effect is not limited to Meta’s platforms it can also be developed for websites, mobile apps and other social platforms like Snapchat and TikTok. If you're curious about creating a custom AR effect, I’m available for consultation and can help guide you through what's possible creatively and technically.
