BBC Glow Up: AR Makeup
Working on this project gave me invaluable experience collaborating on a high production set with the BBC, Snapchat, and the Warner Bros. production team. From concept to creation, I was able to bring my AR skills into a fast-paced broadcast environment, translating creative ideas into cutting-edge digital effects while working alongside industry professionals. It was a major milestone in combining artistic vision with large-scale media production.
As part of the BBC Glow Up x Snapchat collaboration, I was invited to help bring an avant-garde makeup look into the world of augmented reality. This project fused creativity with cutting edge tech to showcase how digital beauty can be reimagined in new, immersive ways.
I worked closely with the talented makeup artist Jake, whose original design was inspired by bioluminescent jellyfish and the calming power of nature documentaries. After aligning on the visual direction together, I led the digital transformation of his look into a fully interactive Snap Lens.
We began by 3D scanning the model’s face, using it as a precise reference point for sculpting the AR effects. I custom built shimmering, glowing 3D elements in Cinema4D, then imported and implemented them in Lens Studio. Every detail from the bubbling bioluminescent textures to the iridescent highlights was designed by hand to reflect the luminous, wet look aesthetic of the original makeup.
The Lens features reactive elements including an eyebrow raise interaction that triggers pulsing animations across the face. I also designed and textured custom eyeliner, lashes, lip gloss and glossy eyeshadow using a combination of materials to capture the full ethereal effect. This was one of the most complex and layered AR makeups I’ve created to date.
A standout moment for me was being on set at Snap HQ in London with the BBC production team, seeing this digital vision come to life on national television. It was a powerful showcase of how AR makeup can push the boundaries of self expression and beauty tech.
