AR Orchids: Snapchat Lens effect
A Personal Exploration in Digital Makeup and Realism
AR Orchids is a photorealistic augmented reality makeup effect I created using Snapchat’s Lens Studio, a tool I’ve been working with for over six years across a wide range of client projects and experimental concepts. This particular lens was a personal project developed in the lead up to my collaboration with BBC’s Glow Up and Snapchat. It was even showcased on set to the MUAs as an example of what’s creatively possible using AR.
For this look, I transformed the delicate beauty of orchids into a digital makeup design that blends realism with fantasy. I modelled the 3D orchids in Cinema4D, then hand painted the textures using Adobe Substance Painter to bring out the rich details and lifelike surface qualities. Once complete, I integrated everything into Lens Studio where I refined the placement on a face mesh to ensure the effect responded naturally to movement and lighting.
This lens was an opportunity to showcase my technical abilities in photorealistic 3D modelling, texturing, and visual storytelling, all within the interactive format of augmented reality. The effect is now publicly available on Snapchat, the leading social AR platform where millions of users explore and create using real time augmented filters and effects.
If you're interested in developing custom AR effects for apps, websites, campaigns, or social platforms like Snapchat, I’d be happy to consult on what's possible. As a Snapchat Lens Partner, I’ve created AR experiences for brands including easyJet, LEGO, and Snapchat itself, helping bridge design and technology to craft meaningful, standout digital moments.
